TO-KNOW

  1. A couple of staffing updates:
    1. Jan reports that she continues to have a strong recovery! She will be out this week and then back for half days next Monday and Tuesday, 12/5 and 12/6 and will return back full time on Wednesday, 12/7!
    2. Angie will be out through Winter Break. Christy VonAllmen will be filling in for Angie while she is out and Kathy Volz, retired Oakdale teacher, will be filling in for Christy.
  2. I will be out of the building at HCESC on Tuesday morning, arriving around 12:00pm. I will be available by phone and able to return if needed. EJ will also be on call if an immediate student need arises.
  3. The Walk-a-Thon Limo Lunch is this Wednesday, November 30. The 12 students participating are listed in this document. Students should meet in the front lobby at 10:45am. We will return by 12:15pm.

TO-DO

  1. A reminder that Dr. Cybulski has requested that all staff offer feedback about the future of language immersion by watching a video and completing a feedback form by this Monday, 11/28 at 4pm. Details and links to all needed information is in this document. Do not hesitate to let me know if you have questions.
  2. This Wednesday is the last day for students to reach November reading goals! Please continue to encourage students to race towards their goals. By the end of the day Thursday, please also enter a “Y” in the November column for each of the students who reached their November goal.

Responding to Defiance in the Moment

Perhaps after a relaxing week-long break, you have that one student who keeps coming up in your mind. You wonder what behaviors he or she will arrive with on Monday after being out of the routine for a full week. This is the student whose behavior is unpredictable and can be outright defiant, making some days so challenging. This article from Responsive Classroom offers some great reminders of why children will defy authority and how we can most productively respond. I think that you will find it affirming of your approach while perhaps also offering some useful ideas and/or reminders.
