Tornado

When we are under a Tornado Warning, it indicates that a tornado has been sighted in Hamilton County. We will announce that all students in special classes are to immediately return to their homerooms.  Within two  minutes, the tornado signal will sound. The remaining students and teachers are to move immediately to their assigned shelter areas on the bottom floor. Teachers who have their class scheduled in art, music and gym are required to go to those classes and proceed with their students to the designated shelter areas.

If the building is in eminent danger, proceed to the nearest hallway and take cover.

The main goal is to reach safety. Therefore, a specific location is not as important as being in a safe area. Doors and windows, if open, should remain open except on the lower level.

Everyone should face the wall. There will be (3) stages in the shelter area.

  1. All students should stand in their areas.
  2. On order, the students should be seated on the floor.
  3. An order will be given to “take cover” which means to crouch with hands covering the head or move under tables.

Earthquake

In the unlikely event of a major earthquake, remain calm and quiet. Teachers and students are to take shelter immediately under a desk, table, or counter. Move away from windows, shelves and other heavy objects that may fall. If shelter is not available, move to an inside wall or corner and turn away from windows. Kneel alongside of the wall with your head bent down to your knees. Place your hands firmly behind your head. If a covering is available, place it over your head for protection from flying debris.

If you are outside, stay outside. Move away from the building as well as any overhead power lines. Sit or lie down, your legs may be unsteady.

If on a school bus, remain seated and hold on. Follow the directions of the driver.

After shocks are a possibility. Be prepared for them.

Fire

The law requires that we hold periodic fire drills. Fire drill procedures must be posted near classroom doors. Upon hearing the fire alarm signal the following should occur:

  1. The teacher should direct the class to exit by the pre-determined plan and route. The  line leader should proceed until an obstruction causes their path out of the building to be blocked. The  leader should then raise their hands over their head  to reverse their route and seek the next nearest and clear exit from the building.

  2. Room windows should be closed, if convenient.

  3. The teacher should take the class attendance book and exit last, checking to see that the room is clear. The classroom door should be closed. The last teacher using an exit should close the exit door.

  4. When arriving at the pre-determined location, the teacher should immediately check the class roster. Any discrepancies should reported at once to the principal.

  5. The building may be re-entered when the all clear signal has been sounded.
