Great Oaks Career Campus administrators will be on hand on Monday, October 22 at a community forum to answer residents’ questions about the 2.7-mill tax levy renewal on the November ballot. Great Oaks President/CEO Harry Snyder and Treasurer/CFO Ben Vanhorn will be at the Oak Hills High School auditorium on the 22d from 7:00-8:00 p.m. to discuss the ballot issue. “Renewal levies are pretty basic,” said Great Oaks President/CEO Harry Snyder. “We’re not asking for new funding, just a continuation of the same 2.7-mill levy that residents have been providing since 1988.”

Great Oaks Career Campuses has served students of Oak Hills and dozens of other area school districts with career-technical education for nearly five decades. On November 6, Great Oaks will be asking voters to renew its current 2.7-mill levy, which has been the same for 30 years. The current levy is set to expire in 2019.

“The 2.7 mills costs homeowners $5.04 per month per $100,000 in value,” said Snyder. “But that single levy provides two-thirds of the Great Oaks budget.” Without that levy, Snyder said that Great Oaks
would not exist.

It makes sense for school districts like Oak Hills to belong to joint vocational school districts (JVSDs) like Great Oaks, said Snyder. By spreading the expense across multiple school districts, communities get more value for their dollars. “School districts must, by law, provide career-technical programs for students. By joining together to form Great Oaks, these school districts can offer opportunities to their students that no individual school district could easily afford to offer.”

The Great Oaks community forum is open to all. For more information about the ballot issue, go to www.greatoaks.com/levyrenewal.
