Language Immersion

In response to the recommendations of the OHLSD’s World Language Study Team, organized in 2012, our district has implemented a language immersion pilot at C.O. Harrison, J.F. Dulles and Oakdale elementaries. Through the immersion pilot, we offer students opportunities to develop proficiency in a second language by learning a content area in the second language. In Oak Hills, our immersion pilot students learn mathematics and science in the Spanish language. This pilot experience draws to a close at the end of this school year.

Our community now faces the decision to

  • Offer language immersion as a district program, OR

  • Offer world languages beginning in elementary school using an electives model, OR

  • Discontinue the immersion model (except for those students who are currently enrolled in the pilot experience).

To help our school board make a decision, our district is holding the following school board meetings, which are open to the public.

Wednesday, September 21, 2016

5  – 8:30 p.m.

Wednesday, October 19, 2016

Invited community members will work with staff members to accomplish the following during these engagement meetings:

  • understand more about the pilot experience,

  • share feedback and views about the different options listed above,

  • know the process Oak Hills is using to assist our school board in making a decision by the December, 2016 board meeting.

  • voice your choice about which model (explained at the engagements) you can support that is in the best interest for our students and our District.

If you did not receive a formal invitation to these two meetings you are still welcome to attend and watch the processing activities. Seating and information relevant to the meeting will be provided.
