Oak Hills writing

Oak Hills is supporting our students’ writing through the implementation of Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study in Writing for grades K – 8. The Units of Study are taught using a workshop model, which includes explicit direct instruction during a mini-lesson, individual student work time and an opportunity for students to share their work with the class. Students experience narrative, persuasive and information based writing through the selection of topics that are of high interest to each student.

Oak Hills hosted a parent writing night at Rapid Run Middle School with Mrs. Lisa Vahey, our district writing consultant. We videotaped the parent night to help parents gain an understanding of what our students are experiencing.

At 12:50, Lisa begins a description of the structure of the lesson and the rigor involved. At 16:21, the lesson transitions to work time, which involves independent time to practice what the teacher just taught and an opportunity for the teacher to conference with students. At 21:35, Lisa provides recommendations for parents regarding questions and language they can use to support their child at home. The remainder of the video involves Lisa sharing the kinds of lessons students will experience throughout the school year when using the Units of Study in Writing.
