Highlander GMC Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to our Highlanders who were named GMC Athletes of the Week!

 
Donny Grote         Boys' Diving        Jr
Donny begins his swim and dive season where he left off. After last season's state qualifying diving, he began the season taking first in the Best of the West diving competition giving the boys a head start for the meet. He also competed at the Dearborn Invitational in the 100 backstroke.
 
Mason Bencurik Boys' Swimming Sr
Mason continues to perform at the highest level. After qualifying last year to state in 4 events, Mason begins his first two invitationals by breaking two meet records. The first was Wednesday at the Best of the West. Mason crushed a 23 year old record in 100 free. Saturday at the Dearborn Invitational, Mason again broke the 100 free record and was named boys swimmer of the meet. 
 
Kaitlyn Hobing         Girls' Swimming            Jr
Kaitlyn has always demonstrated dedication to her school and team. She is at every dive competition, supporting her teammates and helping run the scoring. For the Best of the West meet, even though she was not competing, showed up to clean the pool area and help set up for the dive competition. She exemplifies the true Highlander spirit and is a true asset to the team. 
 
Abby Rutherford         Girls' Diving          Soph
Abby continues to develop into one of the top divers in the league. She has placed first in her two meets, including taking the top honor at the Best of the West meet. Her leadership has given the girls a strong example of hard work and dedication to the team.
 
Zack Horn Boys' Bowling Jr
Zack Horn rolled a 426 series against Taylor to help the Varsity A boys get their first win of the season 2728-2475.  
 
Tanner Iles         Boys' Bowling          Fr
Tanner Iles led the Varsity A boys at the holiday classic with a 421 series. This helped the boys finish in the top 16 at their first tournament of the season.
 
Riley Philpot Girls' Basketball Fr
Riley, a freshman guard, shot 50 percent from the field and led the Highlanders in scoring in two games this past week. She also averaged 3 rebounds per contest, recorded 2 blocked shots and shot 60 percent from 3 points range. She has a 3.75 GPA.  
 
Anna Campbell         Girls' Basketball         Soph
Anna, a sophomore guard, scored a season-high 8 points and a steal in a loss to Mason. Anna shot 71 percent from beyond the 3 point line in two games this past week and also recorded 2 steals. She is shooting nearly 40 percent from three point range this season. Anna is also an excellent student and carries a 3.5 GPA.
 
Adham Shalash Wrestling Sr
Adham helped lead the wrestling team to two dual victories and went 5-0 on the day. He recorded 4 pins and had 1 forfeit.  
 
Avery King           Girls' Bowling         Jr
Through the first 2 weeks of the season, Avery has established herself as the Varsity team leader. She currently holds the 16th best average in the GMC with a 173.6 and rolled the current high game for the Highlanders, a 235.  
 
Brycen Kessler          Boys' Basketball          Soph
Brycen exemplifies a dedicated, committed young man in our athletic and basketball program. He arrives early every day before school to practice shooting. He works hard in practice, during strength training and is a great teammate. Because of his work ethic and positive attitude, not only has he improved but he earned his teammate's respect as was elected a captain as a sophomore, a rare honor on any sports team. Brycen also holds a 4.0 GPA in an honors and AP course schedule.
